It serves as the directly affiliated hospital and clinical medical college of Kunming Medical University, and is recognized as one of China's first standardized residency training bases and a provincial-level medical science and technology innovation base. The hospital ranks first in Yunnan's medical sector for its distinguished medical professionals, comprehensive disciplines, robust technical capabilities, prominent specialty departments, and strong multidisciplinary advantages. It has twice ranked fourth in the Southwest Regional Comprehensive Strength Ranking published by the Fudan University Hospital Management Research Institute and has consistently maintained an A+ rating in the national performance evaluation of tertiary public hospitals for six consecutive years.
The hospital was established in 1941 when the "Affiliated Hospital of National Yunnan University Medical College" was officially founded, with the horizontal plaque bearing the name "Yunda Hospital." In 1956, Yunnan University Medical College became an independent institution and was renamed Kunming Medical College, and the hospital was renamed Kunming Medical College Affiliated Hospital. In 1962, it was renamed Kunming Medical College First Affiliated Hospital, abbreviated as "Kunming Medical College Affiliated Hospital No.1." In 2012, Kunming Medical College was renamed Kunming Medical University, and the hospital was renamed Kunming Medical University First Affiliated Hospital, abbreviated as "Kunming Medical University Affiliated Hospital No.1."

The hospital boasts robust medical service capabilities with three campuses: Xichang Road Campus, Chenggong Campus, and High-Tech Campus, covering a total area of 455 mu (approximately 30 hectares) and a total construction area of 504,100 square meters. It employs over 6,500 staff members with 2,536 designated beds and operates 77 clinical and technical departments. The institution hosts 8 national key specialty programs, 36 provincial clinical key specialty programs, and 15 provincial quality control centers. Advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment includes 1 da Vinci Surgical System, 1 PET/CT scanner, 1 high-end linear accelerator, 10 MRI machines, 15 CT scanners, 1 SPECT/CT system, and 8 DSA systems.
