The First Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine/Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in 1947. It was rated as a Grade III Class A Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in 1994, recognized as a Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Yunnan Province in 2007, and passed the re-evaluation for Grade III Class A Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in 2012,2017, and 2022. It serves as the general hospital of the Yunnan Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Medical Group, integrating 143 provincial, prefectural (municipal), and county (district) Traditional Chinese Medicine hospitals and related institutions in Yunnan Province. Currently, it operates under a unified management model with six institutional names: Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, First Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine, General Hospital of Yunnan Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Medical Group, Yunnan Provincial Acupuncture, Tuina, and Rehabilitation Hospital, Yunnan Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Dermatology Specialty Hospital, and First Clinical Medical College of Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine.

Received two First Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress in Yunnan Province, and has presided over research projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Science and Technology Support Program, National Key Technology R&D Program, and Special Projects of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Approved as a provincial-level postdoctoral research workstation in 2017, and granted national-level postdoctoral research workstation status in 2020.
The hospital has maintained a steady development momentum in areas such as medical technology, scientific research, specialized disciplines, and social service capabilities. Since the national performance evaluation system for tertiary public traditional Chinese medicine hospitals was launched in 2018, it has consistently received an "A+" rating for five consecutive years and ranked among the top 18 nationwide for four consecutive years, securing the first position in the province.
The institution currently operates two campuses in Guanghua and Dianchi, with a total authorized bed capacity of 1,355 and 1,253 beds available for patient admission. It currently houses 79 clinical departments, along with 9 teaching and research divisions. Additionally, it maintains a modernized Traditional Chinese Medicine Preparation Center capable of producing 93 varieties across 13 dosage forms. The institution also has 6 General Party Branches overseeing 70 Party branches.

Currently, Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has commenced the construction project of Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Ethnic Medicine. The construction site is located at the southwest intersection of Yunxiu Road and Anhe Road in Xiaobanqiao Subdistrict, Guandu District, Kunming City, covering two plots with a total land area of 95.52 mu. The project will be implemented in two phases, with a total capacity of 1,300 beds. Phase I will have a construction area of approximately 160,000 square meters and a bed capacity of 800, encompassing three key projects: the Yunnan Provincial National Base for Traditional Chinese Medicine Epidemic Prevention and Control, the National Center for Inheritance and Innovation of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Phase I Medical Comprehensive Area of Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Ethnic Medicine). Phase II will cover an area of approximately 110,000 square meters with a bed capacity of 500. The project aims to establish a modern hospital of traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine with distinct regional advantages in clinical treatment, scientific research, and teaching capabilities. It will also serve as a modern, high-level, and fully integrated national base for traditional Chinese medicine epidemic prevention and control in Yunnan Province, as well as a national center for inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine that embodies ethnic characteristics, contributes to public health, and demonstrates continuity and innovation.
The hospital has now developed into a large-scale comprehensive Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital featuring a concentration of talents, robust technical capabilities, complete departments, advanced equipment, and well-established TCM and integrated TCM-Western medicine diagnostic and treatment systems. It is capable of providing the general public with multi-level TCM, Western medicine, integrated TCM-Western medicine medical services, and healthcare services.
